PwC Best Practices benchmarks
The PwC Finance Best Practices research from a 1997–1999 retail engagement (PetSmart / Marks & Spencer era) is the evidentiary foundation for Canary's financial automation thesis. These are not theoretical targets — they are documented best practices from real Fortune 500 implementations, benchmarked by PwC against a cross-industry dataset.
The platform doesn't aspire to these benchmarks. It makes them irrelevant by replacing the processes that generated them.
The governing observation
PwC in 1998 was already recommending the three-way match, evaluated receipt settlement, buyerless buying, and electronic vendor notification. The "best practice" automated matching rate was 57%. One automobile manufacturer that eliminated the invoice from the process achieved a 70% reduction in AP headcount. A Fortune 500 electronics manufacturer ran 60% of requisitions as "buyerless buying" with buyers intervening only for exceptions.
That was 1998. The reason most retailers still don't do this is not lack of knowledge. It is lack of integrated infrastructure connecting PO, ASN, receipt, and payment in a single system of truth. Canary is that infrastructure — built from scratch, without the legacy integration debt that prevented adoption in the prior generation.
AP benchmarks (PwC, 1997–1999)
These are the best-practice targets PwC documented. Canary's position on each:

The evaluated receipt settlement argument
PwC documented the model explicitly: "The new A/P process begins when receiving personnel enter into the system the quantity received at the dock. The system then matches the receipt to a line item on a purchase order, retrieves the unit price, and generates a voucher."
That is the three-way match smart contract, described in 1998. The requirements they documented: "the purchase department's performance must be 100% accurate every time — employees must negotiate price and communicate it. The receiving department's performance must also be 100% accurate every time — employees must receive items the day they arrive, count them correctly, and communicate them correctly."
Canary enforces both requirements by design. The PO hash is set at commitment. The ASN hash is set at vendor dispatch. The receiving event is captured at the dock via field capture — on the operative's phone, before they leave the dock. The invoice either matches or it doesn't. There is no manual reconciliation step.
A Fortune 500 automobile manufacturer achieved 70% AP headcount reduction implementing this model manually. Canary implements it as a smart contract. The headcount argument is structural.
Buyerless buying
A large U.S. electronics manufacturer ran 60% of requisitions as "buyerless buying" — buyers intervene only for exceptions. PO execution against contracted terms is automated. Canary's L402-gated OTB model is the modern equivalent: the commercial agent executes buys by calling an MCP tool that verifies contract terms, confirms OTB balance, and commits the transaction. The buyer reviews exceptions, not the standard flow.
The PwC benchmark for the electronics manufacturer:
- Order cycle including confirmation: down to 5 minutes (was 20 days)
- Average processing time: from 20 days to 4 days
- On-time deliveries: from 21% (within 14 days) to 65% (within 5 days)
- Supplier count: from 30,000 to 20,000
These are process improvements from the 1990s. They are available today to any retailer with integrated PO, ASN, and invoice infrastructure. The SMB retailer has historically been excluded because the integration cost was enterprise-scale. Canary changes that.
Planning benchmarks (OTB mapping)
PwC planning best practices translate directly to the OTB model:

The critical PwC observation: "Percent of time spent reviewing/adjusting annual budget: 3%." Best practice organizations spend almost no time adjusting the budget because the budget is a plan, not a management activity. The OTB wallet enforces the plan mechanically.

PwC finding: "A large U.S. financial services organization automated over 1,000 regulatory reports, resulting in a reduction in finance staff from 500 to 200." That's a 60% headcount reduction from automation in the 1990s. Canary's event log + pre-aggregated cache produces every standard financial report as a query, not a process.
The synthesis
PwC's 1998 analysis identified every process Canary automates. The benchmarks show the impact when those processes are properly automated:

None of these are new claims.
